Ginger is one of the healthiest and most delicious spice loaded with nutrients that are beneficial to both the body and brain.

Ginger has been used for its medicinal properties for so many years now.  studies have shown that increasing the consumption of ginger helps to reduce the risk of diabetes, obesity and heart disease while promoting lower weight, a healthy complexion, lustrous hair and increased energy levels.


So what are the benefits:

  • Reduces Nausea- As far back in time as we know, Ginger has been used as a remedy for sea sickness. it helps relieve nausea or vomiting after surgeries and is very effective in preventing nausea in Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. It is amazing for pregnant women as well as it tends to drastically reduce the pregnancy related nausea aka morning sickness.

Personally, I remember how I used to get car sick (no matter how short the distance) as a child and nothing seemed to help. Going out with my family always brought mixed feelings of happiness and dread. I couldn’t even read a book in the car. My mom tried every thing she could think of, but it didn’t help my situation one bit. Finally, as a last resort she gave me a ginger root on one of our outings and told me to nibble on it. WOW! It worked. I never looked back after then.

You can chew it, or slice it up and leave it in hot water or boil it and drink.

  • Reduces Inflammation- Ginger appears to reduce the daily progression of muscle pain and exercise induced muscle soreness. It must however be noted that it doesn’t have an immediate impact.
  • perfect as a home remedy for flu and cough when combined with honey, cinnamon and lime.

How to use Ginger

In Teas– Cut up a few slices and pour boiling water over it. Add a little honey and its ready to drink. For an extra kick, you could add a lime slice, a tea bag and some cinnamon. Perfect drink…and healthy too!

Stir-fry– Amazing if used in stir-fry’s. it really gives it a kick.

Fish– Try seasoning your fish with some ginger before cooking/baking or frying, Totally awesome.

Smoothies and juices– Brings life to your drink

Stews and soups – It adds an undeniable flavor and aroma to soups and stews always.

Baking– Literally brings your food to life,

 

Preserving Ginger

When buying ginger make sure all the hands are plump and heavy and ensure that the skin is very smooth. Avoid buying the ones that are dried out at the edges, wrinkled or look moldy. 

In our climate, ginger can stay for about a week and a few days on the counter and still retain its freshness. However, if it is wet, it may not last for long as the water will definitely make it go moldy.

You can also store it wrapped like a carrot in the a plastic bag (with the air pushed out) in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator. Just ensure that the ginger root is dry.

 Ginger is indeed a super-food and should be enjoyed as such.
